Embracing the thrill of putting on the maroon and gold on game day is ingrained in Coach Billy Whaley’s DNA. One of the top players — and arguably one of the best pitchers — in school history, he now leads the team with the same passion and intensity he played with.

Teamwork, exceptional culture, and legitimate work ethic are more than just concepts — they are the unshakable pillars of success, both on the field and in the classroom.

Q&A with Coach Whaley

What brought you to becoming a coach for your sport?

After finishing my playing career, I had no desire to walk away from the game. I joined the staff as an assistant and realized a whole new side of baseball — how much planning, thoughtfulness, and preparation goes into it. It excited me that although I wasn't playing, I could still impact and be a part of the game.

What excites you about this sport?

This sport is personal. It's a constant battle of failure and the ability to be successful is determined by how well you can accept failing. Baseball is one of the only games, regardless of score, that each team gets the same opportunity. You can't run out a clock in baseball, you have to get 27 outs.

What excites you about working with student-athletes?

Being able to play a part in their journey through maturity, growth, and navigating a tough time in life. Watching kids love the game the way I did. The way they compete against anyone, teammate or opponent.

What do you like about coaching at Norwich?

Norwich is a niche place that attracts certain types of individuals. Young adults ready for a challenge that only Norwich presents. Norwich believes in supporting the athletic programs, the coaches, and more importantly, the well-being and success of the students.

Why is Norwich a great place for student-athletes?

Norwich is a place that chews up egos. Norwich is a place to learn how to work collaboratively and as a team, which directly translates to an athlete’s ability to be a part of a team; belong to something bigger than themselves.

What is your approach to coaching?

Trust. Belief that they will do the right thing, make good choices, and my role is to help them when they aren't sure what to do. To give guidance and advice when needed and be a person they trust. Coaching is bigger than the sport, and it becomes challenging to succeed when a team and program does not have faith and trust in each other.

What is Norwich’s approach to athletics, training, and being on a team?

Norwich approaches athletics the way a successful Division III university should. Norwich emphasizes the importance of teamwork, work ethic, and culture. We have all the resources necessary to compete, and Norwich also understands the importance of receiving a solid education while participating in athletics.
