About

Since 2002, geologist George Springston has held an appointment in the Norwich University Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.

His expertise lies in superficial and bedrock geologic mapping, evaluation of landslides and other natural hazards, stream geomorphology, and geographic information systems (digital cartography). George has completed over 30 major geologic mapping projects and several landslide inventories for the Vermont Geological Survey since 1996 and has presented his research at numerous conferences and led many professional field trips associated with the New England Intercollegiate Geologic Conference, the Friends of the Pleistocene, and the Vermont Geological Society. He is a member of the Geological Society of America, the American Geophysical Union, and the Vermont Geological Society. He is a former president of the Vermont Geological Society and serves on the organization’s executive committee.

George has served as an advisor on many undergraduate student research projects. Recent student projects include a study of Streambank stability along Bull Run in Northfield (with Professor John Gartner), an ongoing series of studies of glacial readvance in Plainfield and Barre at the end of the last glaciation (in collaboration with Professor Rick Dunn), and a geotechnical study of gully erosion in Barre Town (in collaboration with Professor Adam Sevi from the civil engineering program)."
