Why did you choose Norwich University?
I chose to attend Norwich University and joined the Corps of Cadets because I wanted to learn beyond what a typical college or ROTC program could offer. I sought new leadership opportunities and aimed to challenge my understanding of what leadership truly means. I recognized the many opportunities for personal growth that the university provides, along with the chance to develop my character and become the person I aspire to be.
Initially, I wanted to go to the Air Force Academy, but I was drawn to the leadership environment and the diversity at Norwich University. I believe the diversity and experiences here will help me grow as an officer. Every branch of the military, including both officers and enlisted personnel, is represented at the university along with three-letter agencies and a civilian side. Learning to work with all these groups and understanding the different perspectives and ways of thinking among the branches will make me a better and more adaptable officer, ultimately preparing me for my future.
What was it like the first time you visited Norwich, and was it a turning point for you?
I first visited Norwich when I attended Leadership Challenge Weekend. At the time, my NJROTC Commander said it would be a great leadership opportunity and advised me to go and try it out. I really enjoyed the experience and ended up doing it again before fully committing to the university.
Can you share one tip with prospective students about making the college decision, and what you recommend when visiting a campus?
I would suggest asking questions that go beyond the surface. Inquire about topics that make the tour guide think and share their experiences and what they've learned along the way. Ask them about the lessons they've learned while at Norwich, as well as the skills they have found to be the most useful. Explore what this university has to offer and ask why the Corp does the small things, such as hospital cornering a bed, are important. Additionally, ask why Rooks have to look straight ahead while in the gutter or at attention. Everything we do has a purpose and meaning behind it, aimed at helping you become a better version of yourself or culminating in teaching you something bigger.
Lastly, what is the most frequently asked question you get from families/students?
"Why do Rooks walk in the gutter?"
The why is that Rooks walk in the gutter to learn about time management and planning ahead. They need to plot a route, consider how long it will take, and determine what they need to bring. This practice encourages them to think both in the moment and for the future, making sure that they don’t lose track of time. They understand that they must return by a certain time or allocate time for travel to their next location so they are not late. Along with that, it makes them use time wisely and not waste it.
