About
Jack Patterson earned his doctorate from the School of the Built Environment at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, and is the former owner of a South Carolina construction company.
He spent more than 17 years working on commercial and residential construction projects. Starting with commercial construction projects, he later co-owned a company that built light commercial and custom residential structures.
In the classroom, Professor Patterson draws upon his diverse construction experience to teach practical, real-world construction management skills to students. Leading a variety of construction management courses and labs, he helps majors build a solid construction knowledge base and sharpen their ability to solve associated construction problems.
He holds a master’s degree in construction science and management from Clemson University and an undergraduate degree in industrial education. Professor Patterson’s teaching experience spans 23 years in university and technical college settings, where he has also served as a department head.

Research Interests and Expertise
Professor Patterson specializes in the use of drones in the construction industry and in teaching drone technology. He is developing a new six-course drone minor at Norwich, preparing students to safely operate drones, apply them across disciplines, and pass the FAA certification exam.
His work integrates drones into senior design projects and explores emerging applications in construction, communications, and cybersecurity. He is committed to equipping students with the skills to become drone professionals in a rapidly evolving field.
