HONORING MAJ Richard Cobb Bulliner ’70, USA in "Selfless Service" by JIM LAURIER

Frederick and Linda Morsheimer (NU ’70), LTC Christopher M. Siedor, USA (Ret.) (NU ’70), and artist Jim Laurier cordially invite one and all to the unveiling of the third painting in Norwich University’s Selfless Service series, a piece commissioned by LTC Christopher M. Siedor, USA (Ret.).

MAJ Richard Cobb Bulliner, USA, NU ’70, began his career as a first responder at Norwich University in 1966 as he trained in the basics of First Aid and Mountain Rescue operations. After graduation, he remained committed to saving lives and entered the U.S. Army as Medical Service Corps Officer. He also attended flight school and became an aviator flying medical evacuation helicopters in the U.S. Army.

MAJ Bulliner commanded the 571st Medical Detachment (Helicopter Ambulance) at Ft. Carson, CO, his last assignment. The 571st was responsible for flying the MAST Program (MAST was [M]ilitary [A]ssistance to [S]afety and [T]raffic). Medical Evacuation Units picked up civilian patients who were in need of transportation for immediate medical care. On September 4, 1982, MAJ Bulliner tragically lost his life attempting to safely evacuate an injured hiker from Eleven Mile Reservoir in Colorado by helicopter. This painting is dedicated to MAJ Bulliner and four others who lost their lives in this rescue operation, CPT William Steven “Steve” Inklebarger, USA; PFC Mark Roy Welch, USA; SSG Gregg Arthur Penn, USA; and climber Patrick Roger Pennington.

Jim Laurier’s painting, Selfless Service, will be unveiled in the museum galleries with a reception sponsored by the Class of 1970 in the museum rotunda to follow.
