One of Norwich’s oldest varsity sports has returned stronger than ever. Tradition Reloaded
Rifle has deep roots at Norwich. The program helped shape the university’s athletic identity, producing standout competitors and unforgettable milestones – most notably Emily Caruso ’00, an NCAA Champion and two-time U.S. Olympian. Today’s team honors that legacy while forging a bold new path forward in collegiate competition.

Elite Competition, Resurgent Program
Since their return to varsity competition, the Cadets have made an immediate impact – placing highly in both smallbore and air rifle events against Division I, II, and III opponents. Whether competing in regular season meets or championship events like the Mid-Atlantic Rifle Championships, Norwich is proving it belongs among the best in the nation.
What Makes Norwich Co-ed Rifle Stand Out?
A Leader Forged in Service
The Cadets are led by Head Coach Patrick Knapp, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who brings a wealth of discipline, integrity, and tactical expertise to the range. His approach to training emphasizes focus, consistency, and confidence – core values that mirror the precision-based mindset Norwich demands of all its Cadet-athletes.
A Historic Range with a Legendary Feel
Baroffio’s Rifle Range in Northfield is where the Cadets take aim. This revered facility has long served as a home for generations of Norwich marksmen and markswomen. Its classic setting, deep tradition, and competitive atmosphere make it a powerful training ground for the next wave of champions. Additionally, Norwich holds the distinction of hosting the 1999 NCAA Rifle National Championship – one of only a few DIII schools to do so.
Strength in Stillness
Success in rifle is not just about mechanics – it is about mental mastery. Norwich athletes learn how to manage pressure, maintain composure, and execute with intention. The result is not only success on the range, but the development of focused, resilient, and goal-oriented individuals prepared for every challenge in life.
A Community of Sharpshooters
The co-ed nature of the program creates a team dynamic that is built on mutual respect, shared responsibility, and tight-knit unity. Whether training side-by-side or competing shoulder-to-shoulder, Cadet rifle athletes grow together – supporting one another’s journey toward precision, performance, and personal excellence.
