Aimee Vieira

Aimee Vieira joined the faculty of the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice in 2006. She earned her doctorate at the Université de Montréal and an Master of Arts and Bachelor of Arts at Michigan State University.

Vieira teaches classes on Introductory Sociology; Racial and Cultural Minorities; Military Sociology; Inequality and Society; and Culture, Conflict and Communication. Her scholarship explores two different lines of research: Her primary focus is on how rural community economic development reflects and structures opportunities and identities spatially on the basis of class and minority group status. She also investigates identity negotiation and the implications of social location for conflict interpreters working in non-permissive environments.

Vieira has written curriculum on developing cultural competence for the U.S. Army JFK Special Warfare Center and School, which trains Army Special Operations Forces. She regularly participates in curriculum reviews with the American Council on Education and has served as Chair of the Racial & Ethnic Minorities Research Interest Group in the Rural Sociological Society.

At Norwich, Vieira applies her expertise in service to the community as a member of the University Assessment Committee, the College of Liberal Arts Curriculum Committee, and has led development of a digitally administered cohort assessment for the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice. She has previously served on the Committee for Academic Technology, founded the Faculty Development Roundtable series, and served as faculty advisor for Pi Gamma Mu, the Ballroom Dancing Club, the Harold “Doc” Martin Society, and the NU Visions Abroad program, in which she accompanied a group of students to San Ramon, Nicaragua.
