Appointment Information & FAQ

What can I expect from an appointment?

At the Norwich Center for Writing, you can expect a welcoming and supportive environment to work through your writing. We are here to help you get to the next step of the writing process, whatever that may be. Here’s what you can expect when you come see us:

Here’s what you can expect when you come see us:

  1. We are NOT an editing service, and we DO NOT proofread papers. While we are happy to talk about sentence-level questions/concerns in your writing, our goal is to help you be a thoughtful and critical writer. Therefore, you can expect appointments to be participatory and collaborative. Your writing coach will ask you lots of questions, provide feedback and/or ideas, and will ask you to make decisions about your writing. Come ready to work!
  2. You are in control of your writing. Your writing coach will always begin the appointment discussing your goals, questions, or concerns. While your writing coach can be a sounding board for ideas and may provide suggestions and feedback, you ultimately get to decide what happens with your paper.
  3. We are not your instructor and, therefore, cannot make predictions or comments about grades. Your writing coach cannot tell you what grade you will receive on a paper. Students should talk to their instructors about grade questions.
  4. Your writing coach may not be from the same major as you or may not have experience with the type of writing you bring in. That’s okay! Your writing coach can still help you with that assignment. They are trained to work with things outside of their expertise.
  5. Appointments are an hour long, but you can expect the last 10 – 15 minutes of an appointment to focus on goal planning/next steps for your paper. Your writing coach will complete a report form that summarizes what you both discussed, what your next steps will be for your paper, and will provide any resources/links that may be helpful. You can access these reports at any time through EAB Navigate.

Types of Appointments

We have three different kinds of appointments to best meet your needs. When selecting an appointment type, pick the one that would best support your writing goals.

In-Person Appointments

In-person appointments take place in the Center for Writing, which is located on the 2nd floor of the Kreitzberg Library, room 201. Please bring all the materials, including tech, you need to work on your writing to your appointment.

Virtual Appointments

Virtual appointments take place over Teams. Prior to your scheduled appointment time, your writing coach will send you a Teams Link to access the meeting. We strongly recommend using headphones for these appointments to cut down on feedback noise. Our writing coaches will always have their cameras on, but you are not required to. Please have all the materials you need to work on your writing available and expect either you or the writing coach to screen share!

Recorded Appointments

This is our asynchronous option, meaning that you do not need to be present or available during the appointment time. However, you still need to make the appointment to reserve the time for a writing coach to review your work. In a Recorded Appointment, a writing coach will read your paper, provide a few written comments, and then will record themselves explaining their feedback in more detail. You will receive a copy of your draft with comments AND a video link via email. Please email your paper prior to the appointment time to writingctr@norwich.edu

Center for Writing FAQ

If you take classes on Norwich’s campus (i.e., residential or commuter student), you can make appointments through EAB Navigate. See our instructions here: Scheduling an Appointment_CfW.pptx If you are a Norwich Online or Masters student, please email writingctr@norwich.edu to schedule an appointment.

You are allowed to have as many appointments as you want. However, we strongly discourage back-to-back appointments. You are welcome to have more than one appointment in a day, but please break up the time. This gives you time to work on your writing and gives the writing coach an opportunity to recharge.

You do not need to be available at the time of your Recorded Appointment. The appointment reserves time on the writing coach’s schedule to review your paper and provide feedback. You should email your paper AND the prompt (and any other relevant material) to writingctr@norwich.edu before the appointment time. If you do not email your paper before the appointment time, the appointment will be marked No Show and you will need to reschedule.

You should receive feedback, via email, within an hour after the appointment time. For example, if you booked a Recorded Appointment from 3 – 4 PM, you should receive an email with feedback by 5 PM. If you do not receive feedback within the hour after the appointment time, please email us.

Nope! But we always recommend making an appointment (it guarantees someone will be available to talk). However, you are more than welcome to stop by (2nd floor of the Kreitzberg Library, room 201). If a writing coach is available, they’ll be happy to help.

You can either request a different time through our scheduler (EAB Navigate) OR, you can email us at writingctr@norwich.edu. We will do our best to accommodate appointment requests outside of our normal hours. However, we cannot guarantee someone will be available.

Please cancel your appointment! This frees up the appointment slot for another student. You can do this in EAB Navigate or by locating your appointment confirmation or reminder email.

Absolutely! However, most Norwich Online students currently don’t have access to our scheduler. Please email writingctr@norwich.edu to schedule an appointment. Please try to request appointments at least 24 hours in advance so that we can best accommodate your request.

Absolutely! However, most Masters students currently don’t have access to our scheduler. Please email writingctr@norwich.edu to schedule an appointment. Please try to request appointments at least 24 hours in advance so that we can best accommodate your request.

You will need to send your professor a screenshot of your appointment report. To access your appointment report, go to EAB Navigate, click on the Reports tab under “Student Home,” then find your appointment report from the Center for Writing. Click on “View Report” and take a screenshot of the box that pops up.
