Meet Coach Ian Thomas – a champion on the field and off. His accomplishments, both as a player and coach, epitomize his knack for success. The Cadets’ recent resurgence under his leadership certainly proves it. No doubt, success follows him!
Under Thomas’ decisive leadership, the future of Norwich Women’s Lacrosse took an impressive turn. In his debut season, the Cadets achieved an amazing 12-5 record, earning a 10-3 mark in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) – their best performance in over a decade. With an undefeated regular season at home on Sabine Field, the Cadets confidently secured a top-four seed in the conference playoffs.
Thomas’ tenure at Norwich University epitomizes accomplishment. A four-year member of the Corps of Cadets and being a driving force behind the men’s lacrosse team at Norwich, he was the definition of success on The Hill. Thomas was pivotal in propelling his team to their first-ever conference championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament. He also etched his name in the record books as one of the top players in program history, graduating ranking 5th in goals (75), 6th in assists (45), and 6th in points (120). By leveraging his own successes at Norwich, Coach Thomas is able to pass along insight to his current players, all of whom are fiercely committed to leaving their own mark, just as he did.
Prior to being named the head coach for the Cadets, Thomas enjoyed coaching success at the high school level as well as an assistant coach for the Cadet men’s lacrosse team. He helped the men’s team reach five consecutive trips to at least the conference semifinals. Thomas was recognized as the U.S. Lacrosse Vermont Coach of the Year and Division II coach of the year at the prep level. With Thomas, it is not just about victory, but also doing things the right way. His teams also know how to win with class as demonstrated by earning the Division II Sportsmanship Award as voted on by the Vermont Lacrosse Officials Association.
