Q&A with Head Coach Cipriano
What brought you to becoming a coach for your sport?
I’ve played soccer my whole life and after graduating college I knew I wanted to stay involved in the game. My passion for soccer made me want to learn more about the game from a different perspective, so when my playing career ended it was clear I wanted to become a coach.
What excites you about this sport?
The suspense and build-up to big moments in the game has always been exciting to me. Soccer is generally a low scoring game, making the big moments even bigger. From game winning goals to missed scoring opportunities, to a decisive call by the referee, it is hard to deny that this makes soccer one of the most exciting sports in the world.
What do you enjoy about working with student-athletes?
I have always enjoyed helping student-athletes navigate this important time of their lives. From helping them become better players on the field, to being there to support them through their everyday lives, I have always enjoyed seeing each student-athlete find their way through this crazy process.
What do you like about coaching at Norwich?
The sense of community at Norwich is unlike most other schools in the country. People here have a deep passion and love for this school, and it is always a great honor being able to represent Norwich.
Why is Norwich a great place for student-athletes?
At Norwich we are truly dedicated to creating better individuals who are going to make an impact after they leave here. It goes beyond just sports or academics here, we are teaching student-athletes how to be committed members of their community while teaching them lifelong skills that will help shape them as they enter the next stage of their lives.
What is your approach to coaching?
I’ve always approached coaching in a way that focuses on building positive relationships in order to push athletes to reach their potential. Relationships are a key factor in everything we do in life, and coaching is not different. If players feel they are supported, then they will find confidence to push themselves to improve each day. This also allows me to be more demanding, have higher expectations, and challenge players to always get better.
What is Norwich’s approach to athletics training and being on a team?
Norwich fosters a great environment where players are supported and encouraged to be a part of a team. Norwich knows the benefits of being a part of a team and how that will help student-athletes in many areas of their lives. From leadership, to teamwork, to dealing with victory and defeat, there are lessons in these moments. At Norwich, they see the benefit of athletics and being on a team and how it can help them succeed in other areas on campus.
