Michael Kelley, Ph.D., P.E., is an associate professor who teaches in the civil, environmental, and construction management programs and in the leadership minor.
His areas of research interest include drinking water treatment and expanded accessibility in state parks.
Professor Kelley is a 27-year veteran of the U.S. Army, retiring in 2003 as a colonel, professor, and head of the environmental science and environmental engineering program at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He served in Germany during the Cold War and in several locations in the United States, first in the Corps of Engineers and later as a Medical Service Corps officer.
Afterward, he returned to his alma mater, serving Norwich and her students from 2003 to 2012 as vice president for student affairs and concurrently from 2003 to 2011 as commandant of cadets. He transitioned to the David Crawford School of Engineering in 2012 and has assisted in two recent Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology accreditations, including the inaugural accreditation of the construction management program.
Along with a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Norwich University in 1974, Kelley earned a master’s degree in civil engineering from Purdue in 1976 and a doctorate in environmental engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1996. He has been registered as a professional engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia since 1979.
