About
Stephen M. Pite earned his BFA at the School of Visual Arts, and his MA at Columbia University, both in New York City, and completed his PhD at the University of Kansas in Philosophy of Education with minors in Evolutionary Ecology and Visual Anthropology.
At Norwich Dr. Pite teaches video production, journalism, and various courses in communications theory and practice. He has led academic programs in design communications, digital media, and visual storytelling as professor, chair, dean, and director at the School of Visual Arts, the Southern California Institute of Architecture, the Art Institute of New York City, and the Vermont College of Fine Arts. He has been transforming design communications, as an educator and a practitioner, for 35 years.
Stephen served as design and marketing communications director for numerous freelance clients, as a publisher and design director for of a monthly magazine, and as a communications manager for a division of JP Morgan, and as a visual story teller and filmmaker for institutional and corporate clients. In 2002 Stephen authored "The Digital Designer," a college text that evolved out of collaborative exploration with scores of contemporary designers across the USA. The text was adopted at 80 universities. He has served on the board of directors of the Green Mountain Film Festival, The White River Indie Film Festival, the Lost Nation Theater, and for the past 6 years has served as the Governor’s Appointee to the Board of Trustees of the Vermont Arts Council.
His dissertation research project entitled, Perspectives on Learning: Information Theory and the Sciences of Complexity, brought together his creative communications practice with a theoretical foundation for his work in transformative curricular and academic program design for experiential learning in the Digital Age.
Stephen teaches to help prepare the next generation of leaders for success at the dynamic intersection of economic, cultural, social and personal growth.
