Visiting International Students and Scholars

A message from Norwich University’s assistant vice president for international education

On behalf of the International Center, I wish to personally express our excitement of the prospect of seeing you all on the Norwich University campus for in-person instruction. We cannot wait to meet our new students and to welcome back our returning ones.

Because Norwich University has decided to resume normal campus operations, international students holding an F-1 or J-1 visa are expected to:

  • Attend classes on the Northfield, Vermont, campus.
  • Enroll in at least 12 credits, with no more than three credits of online classes.
  • Agree to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Failure to adhere to any of the above may cause you to lose your F-1 or J-1 visa status, requiring you to depart the United States immediately.

Returning students who have been abroad for more than five months should request a new I-20 with an updated travel signature. Please email Laura Cornell at lcornell@norwich.edu and include your name and A number.

All students will receive arrival instructions — including arrival dates and documents you need to submit based on your lifestyle and student status. Please review it carefully and let us know whether you have any questions or concerns. We are here to advocate for you and support your needs and goals.

Finally, if you have not already done so, please review your airline’s COVID-19 test or vaccine requirements 21 days, 14 days, and seven days before your departure date. As a reminder, the university will not be providing airport pickup for returning students; we recommend using Vermont Tour and Charter. For information on costs or to schedule your pickup, visit https://vermonttourandcharter.com/

If we can be of any assistance, please email international@norwich.edu.

Enjoy the rest of your summer. Stay tuned, remain in touch, and travel safe!

Sincerely,
Thy Yang
Assistant vice president for international education
Norwich University

For International Students

The F-1 visa is intended for non-immigrants wishing to pursue academic studies and/or language training programs for a period of time in the United States. The F-1 visa program is managed by a shared database called the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). F-1 students are granted permission to remain in the United States until the completion date noted on the Form I-20 plus 60 days provided they remain enrolled full-time and meet all other terms and conditions of the F-1 status.

The J-1 visa is generally used for students in specific educational exchange programs such as the Fulbright, LASPAU, DAAD, AmidEast, etc. The purpose of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program is to provide foreign nationals with opportunities to participate in educational and cultural programs in the United States and return home to share their experiences.

The J-1 visa program is managed by a shared database called SEVIS.

The J-1 visa and the J-2 visa (for dependents) are obtained by presenting to a U.S. embassy or consulate a Form DS-2019 issued by the Exchange Visitor sponsor.

For International Scholars

The J-1 visa classification is part of the U.S. Department of State’s (DOS) Exchange Visitor Program (EVP). For more information about the J-1 program, please review U.S. Department of State website. This program includes sixteen different categories of Exchange Visitors. In addition to enrolling international students in the J-1 student category, Norwich University is also authorized to use the following two categories for “scholars:”

  • Professor
    Short-Term Scholar
