Are you a Norwich student who loves the outdoors and enjoys working with people? The Shaw Outdoor Center (SOC) has several job opportunities for students who are passionate about outdoor recreation, customer service, and hands-on work.

Shaw Outdoor Center gear and bikes

All SOC staff are responsible for providing excellent customer service — whether assisting patrons with trail information or helping them find the right equipment. 

We’re looking for team members who thrive in a social environment, are excited about outdoor activities, and can handle essential operational tasks. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a passion for the outdoors are key. Paid training sessions are required.

Available Positions

Rental Staff

SOC rental staff ensure smooth operation of the rental shop, processing waivers and rental agreements, sizing and cleaning equipment, managing inventory, and handling phone and email inquiries. This role requires strong attention to detail, organization, and excellent customer service skills.

Bike Mechanic

SOC bike mechanics are responsible for maintaining the mountain bike fleet and assisting customers with bike fit recommendations and maintenance advice. Responsibilities include performing bike repairs, managing inventory, placing orders, keeping the work area clean, and supporting repair clinics. We seek individuals who are detail-oriented, organized, and passionate about biking.

Paintball Staff

Paintball staff help operate the Norwich paintball field for club and special events. Duties include maintaining equipment, managing events, filling air tanks, ensuring safety procedures, processing waivers, handing out gear, and refereeing games. This role is ideal for those who enjoy paintball, working outdoors, and leading groups.

Trail Crew

Trail crew members assist in maintaining Norwich’s trails and ski runs. Tasks include clearing brush, trimming, digging, sawing trees, building bridges, improving drainage, and constructing new trail features. Staff also maintain bonfire pits and wood stacks, supervise volunteer crews, and groom cross-country ski trails in winter.

Climbing Wall Instructor

Climbing wall instructors support SOC by monitoring the climbing facility, enforcing safety policies, and teaching climbing skills. Responsibilities include checking in climbers, teaching belay classes, supervising climbing sessions, belaying, and fostering a welcoming environment. Instructors also assist with cleaning and maintenance of the climbing wall and are required to attend one all-staff training each Fall and Spring semester.
