Shaw Outdoor Center

The Shaw Outdoor Center at Norwich University provides access to outdoor adventure with trails, equipment rentals, and educational programs. Located at the base of Paine Mountain, it offers diverse activities and learning opportunities for students, staff, and faculty.

Just a short walk from the Wise Campus Center, the Shaw Outdoor Center (SOC) is your gateway to outdoor adventure. Explore over 1,000 acres of forest with miles of multi-use trails connected to the Town of Northfield trail system. Enjoy activities like mountain biking, hiking, trail running, backcountry skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, orienteering, and disc golf.

Work Around Shaw.
A contractor will start mowing the ski trails and fields the week of 22 SEP. Please use caution when using the trails.

Special Events.
Sunday 27 SEP Access to the Shaw parking lot will be limited during the events, bike travel on the Orange Trail will be closed during the race, Hole 9 and 13 on the Disc Golf course will be unavailable this weekend.

0500-1200 AMCSUS Patriot Games. There will be groups competing along the Red Trail, Anchor, Upper Quarry and a helicopter landing in the area of the lower quarry.

0800-1400 The Paine Mountain Trail Race. Race starts at 1000. Register for the Race

Norwich and Northfield Trails are Open.
All trails in the Norwich and Northfield Town Forest are open. If you encounter some muddy areas please walk/ride through them and not around them.

The rebuilding mountain bike skills trail behind the Shaw Outdoor Center is now complete. Please do not walk on the trail or features.

Reminder: there are No motorized bikes, dirt bikes, scooters, etc. on the Norwich or Northfield trails.
