SCULPT POSITIVE INFLUENCE IN THE WORLD

Drawing on design build and the Stone Art’s School’s emphasis on human-centered design, our faculty teaches—and inspires—you to use critical thinking in the design process to bring new value to citizens, communities, and companies.

YOUR LIFE AS A DESIGN ARTS STUDENT AT NORWICH

It is a rigorous discovery into your potential with faculty and a group of individuals who are, like you, enthusiastic about art and its traditions, craftsmanship, and innovation.

Expect to explore contemporary design production techniques, which blend traditional arts with modern technical ability, such as computation and computer numeric control machinery.

This means we will challenge you to bridge the dialogue between traditional approaches and experimental innovation. In other words, you learn a digital approach to a traditional path.

...seek inspiration in Barre’s thriving community which has been attracting designers and sculptors from Europe and North America seeking to hone their craftsmanship and techniques since the 1920s

You have several avenues at your disposal to shape your vision. First, it is through a partnership with the Vermont Granite Museum’s Stone Arts School, only twenty miles away in “The Granite Center of the World,” Barre, VT. Here, you tap into your curiosity and creativity with a premier source of stone arts information and education known for merging historical and digital practices in art, fine craft, and industry.

Secondly, seek inspiration in Barre’s thriving community which has been attracting designers and sculptors from Europe and North America seeking to hone their craftsmanship and techniques since the 1920s. The Vermont Granite Museum, founded in 1994, has figured centrally in celebrating and preserving the region’s granite heritage and industry.

Your junior year includes a semester abroad at our Berlin, Germany campus (CityLAB: Berlin). There you develop a global perspective of art and architecture. Lastly, your senior year involves an internship or apprenticeship and completing a capstone project.

MIX ART AND BUSINESS

To be successful in your field, it is essential that we develop your business mindset so you can effectively promote yourself and your craft. Norwich also teaches you to market what you make with added courses in personal finance, business, and general education. You will have the choice to become an entrepreneur and work for yourself, doing what you love.

TO SET YOURSELF APART

Consider joining one of the Leadership Academies, developed using our bedrock Leadership Development System with an experiential learning approach for those interested in joining either the private sector or government workforce to serve our country. These academies focus upon pathway opportunities for tuition assistance, fellowships, and internship programs.

BUILDING YOUR CAREER AFTER DESIGN ARTS

While you are finishing your degree consider enrolling in one of our Accelerated Master’s Pathways where you can apply your upper-level undergraduate courses and training into graduate credit and finish within 12-18 months after graduation online.

Your real-world knowledge will give you a head start with business and industry partners. You will graduate ready to compete in multidisciplinary fields and you will feel poised for the future.

Design+Build Collaborative

For more than 20 years, our students have constructed full-scale projects to address Vermont community needs. Building on the seven affordable-housing prototypes Norwich has developed since 2011, the Collaborative continues not only to design and prototype regionally informed, resilient housing, but also to organize and coordinate related research and programs between the schools comprising the College of Professional Schools and partner with community organizations.
